Why Great Fit Is a System, Not a Size Chart

customer walks into one store and buys a Medium.
She walks into another and needs a Large.
At a third, the Medium closes at the bust but floats at the waist.
Her body did not change between stores.
The system did.
Same label. Different fit.
The fitting room is where the abstraction becomes real.
A size label is not a body measurement.
An “M” is only the final shorthand for a chain of decisions made long before the garment reaches the fitting room.
Body. Block. Silhouette. Ease. Fabric. Construction.
Change one, and the same Medium becomes a different garment.
The body is not a set of circumferences.
Two women can share almost the same bust measurement and still require different pattern architecture.
Shoulder width. Bust position. Torso length. Posture. Balance.
The numbers may be close.
The bodies are not the same.
One dress. Two architectures.
The design does not need to change.
The neckline can remain. The silhouette can remain. The designer's intent can remain.
What changes is what lies underneath.
Dart. Shoulder. Armhole. Balance. Ease.
A size chart describes. A block decides.
The block determines how the garment understands the body before fabric is even cut.
Shoulder. Balance. Suppression. Ease. Length. Shape.
This is where fit begins.
It fits the size.
It doesn't quite fit her.
The bust may close. The waist may measure correctly. The length may fall within tolerance.
And yet the garment can still feel wrong.
This is where measurement ends and fit begins.
The answer is not another size.
It is a better relationship between body and garment.
The body informs the block.
The block responds to the design.
The design keeps its identity.
Fit becomes a conversation, not a compromise.
We didn't redesign the woman.
We redesigned the architecture.
The style remains recognisable.
The relationship with the body changes.
We studied the problem.
